Man’s Treasure
A solo exhibition held at the Taoxichuan Art Center in 2024 developed during a six week artist residency in China’s ceramic capital, Jingdezhen.
Oversized jewellery boxes forming modular pillars explore themes of consumerism, extraction, and value perception, inspired by my rock collecting obsession in childhood and questions about human nature. It aims to provoke contemplation on material reuse, the common human desire to hunt for ‘treasure’ and the endless pursuit of having more.
The slip cast boxes are made using recycled clay, feature recycled aluminum closures and are embellished with ceramic ‘rocks’ made from circular materials. The glazes are made using only materials diverted from landfill including glaze spray booth waste, broken ceramics, glass sludge, sword carving shavings and discarded plaster moulds.
